Empyrium, Where At Night The Wood Grouse Plays

Germany, 1999.

Empyrium were a german Doom/Neofolk collective that spaned the years of 1994 through 2003. This is their third album, a fully acoustic and minimalist approach to the doom genre, played only through nylon guitars, vocals and a sporadic use of flute and some martial-like drums. Fans of Ulver´s "Kveldssanger" will eat this up.

Ereb Altor, By Honour

Sweden, 2008.

Ereb Altor is an "epic viking doom metal" band influenced by Bathory and Candlemass. After a 2003 demo called “The Awakening”, their debut full-length “By Honour” was released by I Hate Records in March 2008. I think that this album is so damn good that even those who don't appreciate the genre will like it.

Shrinebuilder, Shrinebuilder

US, 2009

Them Crooked Vultures may have had all the publicity, but as far as super groups go Shrinebuilder took all the merit. A behemoth of an album, every riff, every vocal, every solo was impressive in its own right without reminding you of some second hand association to Neurosis, Sleep, OM or Saint Victus.

Wolves in the Throne Room, Two Hunters

US, 2007

Black metal is a pretty stale genre usually, but this release proves mixing in elements of post rock and doom can make things a lot more interesting. Vocals will be slightly distracting if you don't usually listen to cookie monster metal, but they're very well executed, timed and are occasionally intertwined with female vocals.
