Cynic, Traced in Air

U.S., 2008

Cynic has completely done it again. I've been unknowingly longing for this record for the past 15 years. This is a finely woven piece of pure technical and progressive metal, by almost all of the same veterans who had set a landmark with Focus back in 1993.
Coherently interlaced, the 35 minute long passage composed of trademark incisive music, will most certainly – shall we not give in to prejudice – blow you away.

The (Fallen) Black Deer, Requiem

U.S., 2008.

The first release for The (Fallen) Black Deer is out on Southern Records as part of their Latitudes sessions. These sessions consist of one day in the Southern Studios in which as much was done as possible and include other bands like White Magic, Grails and Miasma & The Carousel Of Headless Horses. This instrumental album was created as an alternative soundtrack to Kubrick's The Shining, and combines post-rock, post-metal and sludge.

Gordian Knot, Emergent

U.S., 2003

Gordian Knot is the instrumental brainchild of bassist Sean Malone (Cynic, O.S.I.) that defines – counting on a cast of invited world-renowned musicians – a genre somewhere between progressive rock and metal, with a large variety of influences.
This sophomore album is a finely constructed journey and recollection of some of the most memorable and natural music around.

John Murphy, 28 Days Later OST

UK, 2003

You have probably watched 28 Days Later, and whether you liked it or not, I'm sure you've paid attention to the soundtrack. John Murphy creates a gloomy environment, adequate for the film, combining post-rock and electronic. He used a heavily edited version of Godspeed You! Black Emperor's track "East Hastings". However, the song was excluded from the soundtrack, because its rights were only obtained for the film.

Orange Tulip Conspiracy, Self-titled

US, 2008

Jason Schimmel's most recent project, this album features Estradasphere and Secret Chiefs 3 bandmates. From one of the very few reviews I could find:

"It swings, it sways, it grooves and it rocks-these guys can play anything with frighteningly epic precision: eccentric lounge, Italian Giallo, futuristic metal, café’ Romany, near eastern jazz. These are merely vague points of reference as descriptions like these don’t do the music justice. These tracks are lean and tasty without a spec of fat on the plate blending classic retro styles with new ideas that cannot be properly articulated. "

Noekk, The Water Sprite

Germany, 2005.

Full of atmospheric doom yet strangely alluring, The Water Sprite opens with soft piano arpeggios that herald a peaceful walk through nature, then suddenly delivers a sonic blow in an avalanche of instrumental frenzy before retreating into itself again. Extremely moody, it exudes a mysticism and gloomy melencholy not unlike ÄNGLAGÅRD or LANDBERK and, to a certain extent, KING CRIMSON for the keyboard work. The lyrics are appropriately serious and profound (one of the tracks, btw. is penned J.R.R. Tolkien). Experimental, moody, intriguing. (ProgArchives)
